German wine, turpentine, Gertrude Stein... [Jan. 7th, 2008|11:18 pm]
[Current Mood |soreirritatingly sober]

It's too bad that Gertrude Stein had to go and exist already, because I think I would be a pretty fucking good Gertrude Stein.  Observe:

Nonstick pans, so are the days of our lives.  One cannot behold verbatim.  Preposterous lemmings why do you taunt me.  The christening of paste is inexcusable.  Pork swords.  Pork swords.  Spork words.  Everyone knows weaving blue baskets must ultimately be stricken.  The unlovely bottom of the muffin regurgitates excesses.

Except that I don't think that I could go on like that for nearly 50 pages.  Unless, of course, the price was right and the booze was flowing.

Wee update from the frozen midwest [Jan. 6th, 2008|04:26 pm]
[Current Mood |apatheticapathetic]

1.  Columbus is fucking cold.  It's actually warmer today than it has been in some time, but I'm sick to death of ice and snow.  Fuck the north.

2.  Christmas was absolutely bloody fantastic.  I felt more like myself while I was at home than I have in a very long time.  I feel very disconnected here and I am not sure how to make sense of myself as a graduate student/scholar/freshman comp teacher.  At home, I am a sister, daughter, granddaughter, friend.  Here, I don't know.  I feel unsettled, everything is unstable and transitory.  The drugs help and movies and TV and retail therapy help, but it isn't the same as feeling secure in who you are and where you are.

3.  I think my new batch of freshmen hate me.  It doesn't help that I'm teaching an English class with the theme of 'Celebrity and Fame Culture' to a class of 24 kids 20 of which are both male and engineers.  It will take the touch of the Flying Spaghetti Monster's Noodly Appendage to get me through the quarter, I fear.  I do at least have an interesting student from Ireland.  I can't understand what she's saying half the time but I LOVE her voice.

4.  I had my Freshmen fill out obnoxious 'getting to know you' notecards so I could attempt to learn their names.  One of them listed his fun fact as follows: "My favorite desert is cheesecake."  I found the notion of a cheesecake desert to be incredibly appealing, possibly because I was on my period at the time.

5. Lush is having an INSANE in-store sale; buy one get one on all items made before December and buy one get TWO on all bubble bars and bath ballistics made before December.  Of course, I ended up getting a damned truckload of stuff and will have to take a bath every day for the next three months to use it all.  I'm okay with that.

6.  Gmail is such a miracle for email-hoarders.  My gmail says "You are currently using 36 MB (0%) of your 6291 MB."  I have 757 messages and it still isn't even 1% of my allotment.  Love.

7.  I get Fridays off all quarter, so if I'm not cataclysmically busy (a rather large 'if'), I may try to visit Lexington more frequently.  No promises, but I will give all my Lexington lovelies a heads up should I be headed your way.

The late Albus Dumbledore (rest his soul) outed as gay by his creator.

And?  Does it strike anyone else as odd that this is coming out now, but isn't hinted at in the books at all?

I did like her comment on the fanfiction though.  *races to revise her Albus/Minerva S&M fic to feature Mr. Olivander instead*

Suck it, Louisville. [Sep. 15th, 2007|11:11 pm]

I never cared much about football, but I'm a firm believer that anytime the Cats beat the Cards, regardless of the sport, an angel gets its wings.

I'm glad that my long-suffering parents, who buy season tickets every year, had something to cheer about this evening.

Firefox, friend to you and me. [Sep. 1st, 2007|12:30 pm]

[Current Music |The melodic sound of the air conditioner]

Having learned that the Safari browser does not play well with Carmen, the site I will be using to communicate with my students and instructors at school, I find myself using Firefox for the first time.  I really like it.  I hated the way it would underline my online misspellings at first because it made it difficult for me to speak lolcat, but it is also making me realize just how many common words I misspell on a daily basis.  I can easily rattle off words like pulchritudinous, yet misspell words like Hawaii and Cincinnati, words that an Almost-English-Professor should easily be able to spell.  Thanks for the wake-up call, Firefox.

Do any of you use Firefox?  I know you can do some pretty nifty customizations but I don't know how.  Tips?

I had forgotten what a real Saturday looked like.  Sleeping until 10 AM when you've been getting up at 6:30 is good shit.

Is it bad that I kind of want to have sex with this guy? Accio Deathly Hallows (No Spoilers) [Jul. 26th, 2007|11:14 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Music |clothes drying]

Brilliant! I don't know about his pronunciation of 'accio' as ack-see-oh, they say it ack-ee-oh in the films and ah-see-oh in the books on tape (as per the Scholastic Pronunciation Guide), but, whatever. Something about a guy in black-rimmed specs playing guitar and singing about Harry Potter just does it for me. *sigh* Someday my geek will come.

I want to eventually do a little writeup for Deathly Hallows, but I have not had the will these past few days. I'm still a bit shellshocked over the series being really and truly finished.

On an unrelated note, Shortcake has moved into the house with us and seems to be handling the transition well. She has not yet destroyed anything (knock on wood) and has taken a liking to lying on the couch and watching television. TBS is showing Best In Show at the moment and she appears to be utterly transfixed, which is why I felt safe in leaving her for a moment to write this entry.

Deathly Hallows Deathly Hallows Deathly Hallows OMG [Jul. 16th, 2007|05:02 pm]

So, what is everyone doing about this book 7 release business?  Ordering from Amazon is out for me because our mail doesn't get delivered until like 4 PM and there is NO WAY IN HELL I'm waiting until the afternoon to start reading.  I have to work Saturday night and I feel like I should be done by then lest I get spoilered.  I can't decide between going to a party thing at Joseph Beth or B&N or just quietly snagging a copy at the old stand-by, 24 Hour Wal-Mart.  It seems soulless to get the book at Wal-Mart, but it seems less likely that some hideous misanthrope would read the ending and spoiler it loudly for everyone around than at one of the other stores.  Really, nothing can top the HBP Release party at Waterstone's two years ago, at which I hung out with Snape and McGonagall lookalikes in the streets of London.

I also got my book like 5 hours before anyone in the US, good times!

I want Deathly Hallows NOW.  At least I'll have the MCS/Sherwood show to distract me tomorrow.  Also: Kate rocks for always taking care of my puppers when Michael's away.  <3

Well, I'm flattered you thought it would be a good story, and I hate to disappoint, but slackerbunny pretty much is what it is.  I'll break it down a bit though.  I was a NOTORIOUS slacker throughout my college career.  10-page paper due at 10 AM on Friday?  You would find me in the basement of Patterson Hall watching Monty Python's Flying Circus and eating Ben & Jerry's on thursday night without a single word down.  I would start it at about 2 AM and work non stop until the deadline.  And with only a handful of exceptions, they came back with big fat A's on them.  I don't mean to imply that I didn't put work into them, I did, it was just that the creative juices didn't want to flow without that particular sense of urgency that comes with only starting something so close to the deadline.

As for the bunny part.. I just like bunnies.  I have one named Dandin, after the sidekick mouse in Brian Jacques' Redwall books.  I got him when I was in high school and now my parents (begrudgingly) take care of him for me because I don't imagine he'd enjoy traveling very much.  He weighs like 10 pounds and is seriously a bastard and a half, but he's cute as a button.

So, there you go.  ;)

I shall tag:

chuck_the_plant - Seriously, what does that mean?  Is it like, a plant named Chuck or the action of using vegetation as a projectile?

threnod - I feel like you've explained this before, but if you need a break from teaching those 'little Italian shits' English, you could refresh my memory.

shinytoaster424 - Other than the inherent nobility of an appliance that makes foods of a certain size and shape both hot and crunchy, what made you pick this?

euphoriafish - I think this is a seriously cute username.  If your explanation is, 'I just thought it was a seriously cute username,' that will be acceptable.

maniccartoonist - I get the cartoonist part, but why manic?  I kind of want to register as 'depressivecartoonist' to complete the bipolarity.

Uhm... I think I know the meaning behind everyone else's.  I should really try to make the acquaintance of some people with active eljays.  Anyone I didn't name who scoffs at my assumption that I understand their username is welcome to prove me wrong.  :)

[Current Mood |contentcontent]

It has come to my attention that my eljay lies neglected.  We shan't have that.

So recap on the recent important events in my life:
Sunday: Sistergirl the lovely graduated.  Valefuckingdictorian because it runs in the family (also bc no asian or indian kids at her school.  Sorry this is racist but we all know they are smarter than us whities.  They just are.)  Helped her with her speech.  She was brilliant.  She is such a damn star.
Monday: Honda Civic Tour scenester apocalypse.  We met Gabe from Cobra Starship and had a Mentos moment with him.  We did not get to meet the boys from The Academy Is, the M&G line was so long, we made it up to the table just in time to see Bex's big bobble head bopping down the hill towards the bus area.  Bummer.  Then Fall Out Boy was all streamers and pyrotechnics and misdirection and magic and viscera (viscera provided by the Happy Tree Friends).  It was really shameleslly showy and corporate and whorish and to be honest, I loved every minute of it.  I will always prefer intimate club venues adorned with naught but the sincerity of the music, but it is nice to see a big fucking show every now and again.
TusedayWednesdayThursday: Work and shit, Erin moved in YAY.  I lifted 30 pound boxes of peony shower gel above my head on the top of a ladder for 6.75 an hour omgyes.
Friday: Drove home, packed for VACATION
Today: Waiting for the family to get back so we can drive to Knoxville.  We fly out for CANCUN tomorrow morning (with a very brief stopover in Atlanta).  So, by this time tomorrow, I should already be drunk.  :)

To bump up the entertainment value of this post, I will share with you a rare gem brought to you by the Lush Forum (via Somethingawful)

I shit you not, this is a real book, which I will post in its entirety.Collapse ) Edited to swap a d for a v.
